The striker shot to stardom in the summer when he shot Iraq to the Asian Cup title. The Desert Fox currently plays for Qatar league leaders Al-Gharrafa and was recently linked with Marseilles.
“Head coach Manuel Jose is keen on signing Mahmoud for next season, that’s why we have started direct talks with his club Al-Gharrafa,” Al-Ahly marketing department manager Adly Al-Qaeyi was quoted as saying by daily newspaper Al-Ahram on Friday.
The Egyptian giants are not the only club chasing the striker.
“The main hurdle, I am afraid to say, is the fact that the striker is in demand for the time being. However, we will be doing our best to claim his services for next season,” he added.
Mahmoud’s contract at Al-Gharrafa is due to expire in June 2008.
