Anichebe Denies Nigeria Snub

Everton forward Victor Anichebe has defended his decision to pull out of the Nigeria Olympic squad that eventually found itself defeated at the hands of Australia last week.

The striker complained of a hand injury despite having played in two crunch ties for Everton before reporting that it had once again flared out.

Still, he insists that he was not merely looking for an excuse to dodge international duty.

"I felt a reaction in my hand after playing against Nuernberg and Chelsea," he told the BBC.

"It was clear to me and the medical team at Everton that I needed to rest to prevent any long-term damage."

Nigeria lost 1-0 to the Ockers but, while this was a mere friendly result, many within the Super Eagles camp are said to be disillusioned by the absences of so many important players.

Still, for Anichebe, this was not a part of any concerted effort to avoid playing a meaningless game. In fact, it's quite the opposite.

"Any professional footballer has aspirations to play international football and I am delighted I have been fortunate enough to be given that opportunity by Nigeria," he contended.

Anichebe has yet to win a cap for the Super Eagles.
