Gambia To Meet Sierra Leone In Friendly

The match, which has been fixed to be played on Sunday the 23rd of December will take place at the Independence Stadium in the Gambian coastal city of Bakau.

According to reports monitored in The Daily Observer of Banjul, the two coaches of the Gambian National team, Egyptian-born Tarik Siagy and Senegalese Lamin Sarr, are perfecting strategies that will ensure the Scorpions carry the day in the encounter.

They have begun training with the players at the match venue already, and reports indicate that the crop of players present at the training camp comprises a blend of both home-based and foreign based players.

Russia-based player Abdou Jammeh, along with Dawda Bah, Ebrima Sohna, the Nyassi twins, and even the injury-plagued Momodou 'Zico' Ceesay, are all part of the team that is presently training ahead of Sunday's cracker with the Leone stars.

"We have been training for the past week and we hope to do the final selection soon. I need only 20 players or even less for the Sunday match," Tarik Siagy remarked.

"Due to the fact that we have too many players to choose from, so the options are wide and I'm optimistic that we will present a good team at the end of the day."

The Scorpions of Gambia have been drawn in Group 6 of the World Cup qualifiers, which also double as the preliminaries for the 2010 Nations Cup in Angola.

The Scorpions will have to slug it out with the Teranga Lions of Senegal, the Desert Warriors of Algeria and the Liberians. They will begin their campaign proper when they travel to Monrovia in an away fixture against the latter side.

The top team in the group qualifies automatically, while the second can only hope to be amongst the 8 best second-placed teams that will scrape through to the next stage.
