Cameroon Cancel Kenya Camp As Pfister Announces Squad
The Cameroonian National team have cancelled their pre-Nations Cup training camp that was set to be held in Nairobi, Kenya. This is due to the post-election violence that has erupted in the Central African country.
Coach Otto Pfister told reporters that he would instead prepare for the Cup in the west African country of Burkina Faso between the 4th and 14th of this month. The Indomitable Lions had earlier planned to train at high altitude in Kenya for two weeks, starting from this Friday, before their departure to Ghana for the tournament. But following the widespread violence that has followed the December 27th general elections in Kenya, the Cameroonian soccer authorities told local media that they were not prepared to risk their players travelling to the stricken country. According to The Nation newspaper of Nairobi, the Sports Stadium Management Board (SSMB), which entered into the contract with the Cameroonian FA, are hoping that Nairobi will get settled soon enoug,h but have accepted that the team will not train in the Capital anymore. An SSMB official remarked, "It was our hope that the fracas that we are experiencing will subside. It is not good for the country. Things have to move or else we as a country will lose so much. We were hopeful the Cameroon team will come but now it seems it will not materialize." In the meantime, Otto Pfister has announced a 28-man shortlist for the tournament. The list is largely composed of foreign-based players, with Canon Yaounde’s goalkeeper Janvier Mbarga being the only exception.
