Angola Coach Defends Tactics
With both Tunisia and Angola needing only a draw to progress, Goncalves said on the eve of the game that "we are not going to play for a draw."
Both sides then went out and did precisely that, and Senegal are the team who miss out as a result. It was a performance that drew criticism from sections of the media, but Goncalves was having none of it. "We are not here to please the media, we are here to give happiness to the Angolan people and the African people," Goncalves roared. "We have to respect the players who played in this game." When asked about the sterile nature of the game, the long-serving Angolan boss was equally unapologetic. "We have very serious professionals in our squad and this was essentially a tactical game," he stated. "I think we created two good chances, the result was fair and the best two teams qualified." "For the first time we have taken Angola to the next stage of the tournament. We wanted to finish in first place but it wasn't possible." This is another major triumph for The Black Antelopes. Goncalves team also qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 2006. They will face defending champions Egypt in the quarter-final in Kumasi on Monday. source:goal.com |
