Black Stars Light Up Accra On Night Of Celebration
The host nation supporters brought traffic to a halt as they sang and danced their way through the streets of the capital city, many of them carrying replica coffins covered in the Nigerian flag.
The Black Stars ended a bad run of defeats at the hands of Nigeria with a dramatic 2-1 victory at the Ohene Djan stadium and have now made it into the last four of the competition. The jubilation of the fans was magnified by the fact that their team were forced to come from behind and had captain John Mensah sent off on the hour mark. They snatched victory when Nottingham Forest striker Junior Agogo turned in a cross with just eight minutes of the game remaining. They will now face the winners of the Tunisia-Cameroon game which takes place on Monday in Tamale and will have their eyes on a record-equalling fifth tournament triumph. For Ghana coach Claude Le Roy the victory was mildly tainted by the fact that his skipper will be unavailable for the semi-final after receiving a red card for clipping the heels of Lokomotiv Moscow striker Peter Odemwingie. "I rate John as one of the five best defenders in the world and when you understand his role in the team, you will know what a blow it is to us," explained Le Roy. "John did not make a single mistake in the game and I have seen players not sent off for professional fouls much worse than that," he added. Le Roy, who was already forced to field a patched-up defence after losing Shilla Illiasu to injury before the start of the tournament, says he will wait to find out the identity of his semi-final opponents before making any decision on who he brings in. Illiasu is now said to have recovered from his ankle complaint and is back training with the team. "I was hoping to give Shilla 20 minutes in the Nigeria game but didn't have the opportunity. I am not so sure I want to start him in a semi-final after so many months out of action," said Le Roy . "In the end, though, it will be a tactical choice." source:goal.com |
