Palermo The Hero As Boca Remain In Contention

Boca dominated proceedings early on in the match, with the good work of Rodrigo Palacio, who was a constant threat to the Velez Sarsfield defense.
The South American champions kept the ball between themselves, while Velez could only look for counterattacks.
In the 14th minute Boca went ahead with a brilliant header from Martin Palermo, after a cross from Hugo Ibarra.
In the 20th minute the ball fell to Palermo, who was outside of the box, but the striker blasted his effort over the bar.
Boca continued to pressure the Velez goal, but only looked dangerous with Palermo, who was very lively, and the main attraction of the 50,000 fans who crammed into Boca's stadium.
In the 42nd minute Palermo doubled their lead, with another oustanding header, after an almost identical cross from Ibarra.
After the half time break, Velez seemed to pick up their game, with the good work of former River Plate midfielder Victor Zapata.
Uruguayan striker Santiago Silva had a couple of opportunities to pull a goal back for Velez inside the first ten minutes of the half, but he lacked determination.
Boca could hardly cross their half, with the enormous amount of pressure Velez put them under.
But Rodrigo Palacio extended Boca's lead in the 27th minute of the half, with an easy finish.
While one minute later Uruguayan midfielder Alvaro Gonzalez, who assisted Palacio in the earlier goal, added their fourth goal of the afternoon.
The victory keeps Boca's title aspirations alive, with only three rounds remaining this season.
Lanus remain in first position on the league standings, after thrashing bottom-placed Rosario Central 4-1. Their goals were scored by Blanco (42'), Ribonetto (58'), Sand (77') and Valeri (79'), while Vizcarra scored Rosario's single goal.
River Plate are now out of the title race after losing 2-1 against Huracan on Saturday. Peralta put River ahead in the 20th minute, but two goals from Prette (59' and 67') gave Huracan a valuable victory.
Tigre are still in the chase after thrashing San Martin 3-0. Their goals were scored by Martinez (10'), and Ayala (15' and 49').
While Independiente, who started the season so strongly, lost 2-1 against Estudiantes de La Plata in Avellaneda.
The Red Devils went ahead in the 24th minute, with a strike from leading scorer Denis, but ended up losing the match after goals from Piatti (45') and Barroso (59').
