Blanco Wins MLS Goal of the Year
Cuauhtémoc Blanco won the 2007 Sierra Mist Goal of the Year for his left-footed volley into the upper left corner of the goal in the Chicago Fire’s 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake on August 18.
The Mexican international, who joined Chicago midway through the regular season as the team’s Designated Player, collected a pass 25 yards out from goal before dipping the ball over a helpless Nick Rimando. His strike beat out the efforts by Joseph Ngwenya (Houston Dynamo), Kerry Zavagnin (Kansas City Wizards), Danny Dichio (Toronto FC) and Michael Parkhurst (New England Revolution), as was voted on by fans on the league’s website. Blanco was named his team’s MVP after leading them to the Eastern Conference Championship game. He scored four goals and tallied seven assists in 14 games since making his debut on July 29.
