New England to Host Houston in 2008 MLS Opener
The New England Revolution will host the Houston Dynamo to kick off the 2008 Major League Soccer season on March 29 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The game will serve as a rematch of the last two MLS Cup championship matches, which were both won by Houston. It will mark the first time in the Revolution’s 13-year history that they have opened the season at home.
“We’re pleased to open the 2008 season at home for the first time ever, and we’re especially excited to open the season against Houston, which is becoming a great rival after our recent meetings at MLS Cup,” said Revolution G.M. Craig Tornberg. “Gillette Stadium is one of the best home venues in Major League Soccer, and we believe our fans are the most passionate and supportive in the league. Our club is excited to be able to kick off the new season in front of our enthusiastic crowd, and to continue to develop the growing rivalry with Houston.” The Revs and Dynamo have met a total of six times since Houston entered the league as an expansion team in 2006, moving from San Jose. The Revs hold a 1-0-3 lead in the all-time series during the regular season. However, Houston is 2-0-0 in the postseason against New England, both victories coming in MLS Cup title matches. The Dynamo will kick off the 2008 season by playing in the Pan Pacific Tournament in Hawaii in February, along with the Los Angeles Galaxy, J-League Champion Gamba Osaka, and a club from the Australian A-League. The two-time MLS Cup champions will also participate in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup once again. Source: Goal.com |
