Veron: "I'm staying because of the fans and my teammates.
The Argentine star was expected to formalize a move to the MLS club on Friday, with many media outlets already going as far as declaring it a done deal. In fact, DC United were so confident that the transfer would go through that they announced a press conference to mark his official presentation.
At the eleventh-hour, Veron, 32, has now revealed that his teammates succeeded in convincing him to stay in his homeland. "I'm staying because of the fans and my teammates. The truth is that I couldn't say goodbye," the former Internazionale star explained. "My teammates' request for me to stay was very important. And I couldn't ignore the fans' affection. It is impossible not to be touched when you are an Estudiantes fan. "My teammates told me: 'We fought for a year to play in the Copa Libertadores and we have to stay together'," he added. "It was a lot of money; maybe I would advise a kid to go. But in a situation like mine it is better to live for the things that give you happiness." Veron had agreed in principal to a multiyear contract with D.C. United that reportedly would have earned him in the region of $4m in annual salary. source:Goal.com |
