2008 Copa Libertadores Draw Made
The 49th edition of the continent’s most prestigious club competition will begin with the first (qualifying) round on the 30th of January.
In the two-legged knockout phase, Argentine Apertura champions Lanus will meet Olmedo of Ecuador, and Cruzeiro of Brazil will face Cerro Porteno of Paraguay, while Copa Sudamericana winners Arsenal will meet Mineros of Venezuela. The third-placed team from Mexico will face the third-placed team from Bolivia, and Uruguay’s Montevideo Wanderers will clash with Cienciano of Peru, while the first phase will be completed with a meeting between the third-placed team from Colombia, and Audax Italiano of Chile. Last season’s champions Boca Juniors were placed in the same group as Chilean greats Colo Colo along with Atletico Maracaibo, while their third opponents will be the tie A winners. Brazilian league champions Sao Paulo were placed in group seven, alongside Sportivo Luqueno, Nacional de Medellin, and the tie F winner (that is likely to be Audax Italiano). Although none of the groups have reached their full complement, the infamous 'group of death' tag looks like it will go to the group currently containing Fluminense, Libertad and Liga de Quito, with the winner of tie C (that could be Arsenal) set to join them. The round of 16 will begin on the 30th of April, the quarterfinals will start on the 21st of May, while the semifinals will be on the 4th and 11th of June. The two legs of the final of the Copa Libertadores will be played on the 25th of June, and the 2nd of July. The winner of the tournament will earn the right to participate in the 2008 Club World Cup in Japan, as South America's only representative. 2008 Copa Libertadores Fixtures First Round Round A: Olmedo-Lanus.
