Independiente Gather Finances To Complete Suazo Deal

ndependiente are in the process of raising the necessary finance to complete the $5million signing of the Chilean striker Humberto Suazo from Mexican side CF Monterrey.

Los Diablos Rojos were thought to be facing an uncertain financial future before the transfer window opened and their move for Suazo has raised eyebrows in the Argentine press.

Although they have received further payments from the transfers of Sergio Agüero and Oscar Ustari, it was widely predicted that they would have to sell one of their 'name' players in order to raise the funds for Suazo.

With Germán Denis, Carlos Matheu and Victor Soza still at the club, questions have been raised as to how the deal is to be funded, with some predicting that future earnings from reaching the latter stages of the Copa Libertadores will be used to loan the money from creditors.

The fee, which would be the largest transfer payment made in the 103 year history of the club, beats their previous record of $3million, which was used to bring Daniel Montenegro to the club in 2006.

Independiente officials are expected in Mexico within the next week to finalise the details of the deal and make the initial transfer payment.

Despite the transfer being in its latter stages, Suazo is still expected to be part of the Monterrey squad that takes on UNAM tonight in the first game of the Interliga tournament, which decides the remaining two Mexican qualifiers for the 2008 Copa Libertadores.
