Deportivo Cuenca Earn Hard Worked Victory Over Estudiantes
Deportivo Cuenca started the stronger of the two sides, and pushed to the attack in an aim to score an early goal, but were continually kept out by Estudiantes goalkeeper Mariano Andujar, who was in fine form.
Estudiantes, who beat Banfield 2-1 in their Clausura Championship opener on Friday, threatened the Cuenca goal, with good attacks down the flanks from Uruguayan striker Juan Manuel Salgueiro, who was a constant threat. The Argentine club seemed to come more into the match towards the end of the half, but lacked authority when moving forward. But from the run of play, in first half injury time, Cuenca would take the lead, with a well-taken goal from Mauricio Ferradas, who beat Andujar with a well-placed effort. After the break Estudiantes seemed to pick up their game, particularly with the work of Argentine international Juan Sebastian Veron, who pulled the strings in the midfield. But although they created a number of good opportunities to equalize they were kept out by Cuenca goalkeeper Javier Klimowicz, the brother of Borussia Dortmund striker Diego Klimowicz. Cuenca held onto their slender advantage and recorded a valuable victory that will help them a great deal as they try to advance to the knock-out stage of the Copa Libertadores. source:goal.com |
