Korea: Pohang Progress In Play-Offs

Pohang Steelers defeated Ulsan Hyundai Horang-I 2-1 on Sunday afternoon to move within 90 minutes of a place in the K-League’s title decider.

A goal in each half gave the three-time champions the victory and a Halloween date with Suwon Samsung Bluewings. The winner of that meeting will face Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma in a two-legged final .
At the start of an entertaining clash between the two south-east rivals, Lee Sang-ho almost put Ulsan ahead, smacking a shot against the Steelers’ crossbar from just inside the area.
Pohang’s Hwang Jae-won showed fans at Ulsan Munsu World Cup Stadium how it should be done after 34 minutes. The 26 year-old climbed above the Tigers’ defence to head home a free-kick floated into the box by Brazilian import Taveres.
Ulsan fought hard to get back into the game and were rewarded after 70 minutes.
Woo Sung-young had his back to goal when he was found by a Lee Sang-ho header but the veteran striker swiveled on the penalty spot to fire home.
A minute later Lee fired a low shot against the post as Ulsan looked for the winner.
Pohang were under pressure but retook the lead in the 77th minute with a simple and well-taken goal.
Lee Kwang-jae latched onto a through pass from Kim Ki-dong and, from the edge of the area, slid the ball past Kim Ji-hyok in the Ulsan goal.
Despite the hosts' best efforts it proved to be the winning goal and while their poor record against Pohang continued, their season ended.
