This follows a trial period of close to a month of more than 200 players under the supervision of two Uruguayan coaches who was selecting players for the Indonesian Under-16 team.

The two Uruguayan coaches concerned - Cesar Payovic Perez and assistant Jorge Anon - went on a four-city tour to assess and select the players which will be chosen to train and stay in Uruguay beginning in 2008.

“There’s a huge potential in Indonesia to be a powerhouse in the Asian region,” said Perez.

“From the selection process which took into account the technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects, the players showed that they can cope with the training in spite of the two sessions we had each day.

“It was a tough selection process but there were no problems encountered by the young players.”

However, Perez pointed out that apart from the physical conditions and mental resilience to produce top-class players, there is also a need to indent on player intelligence – a focus of Uruguayan football.

“We will not impress on the players to play like South Americans rather, we will impress on them to play to their strength which is far more important,” added Perez.

“What’s important is that we raise the level of the playing abilities of the Indonesian players – at the very least players who can play 90 minutes in a single game.”
