Riedl: I was Asked To Step Down
The Austrian stepped down from the post after the south-east Asian nation were elminated from the SEA Games earlier this week but he claims that he was asked to go.
"I knew the (soccer federation) president was under pressure from the country's leaders and after a meeting with him, I told him I would resign," Riedl told Reuters. "I don't understand the people and the authorities in Vietnam. They get so nervous when you lose. They are so under pressure. They were looking for someone to sacrifice." "I'm a bit of a victim, when you're asked to resign after a penalty shootout, it's a little strange." The 58 year-old took Vietnam to the quarter-finals of the 2007 Asian Cup. "The Asian Cup was our biggest achievement... ever, and reaching the final qualifiers for the Olympics was a huge success, but this is football," he said. Reidl believes that Asian countries need to be more realistic about the ups and downs of the sport. "In football here, when we have success, the president is the winner, when we lose, the coach is the loser," he said. "There are too many ups and downs in the way people think. You can't be smiling one second and crying the next." "The waves in Vietnam are too high for me. The fans were happy with the Asian Cup, then at the SEA Games, they were so angry with us. I cannot understand this." source:goal.com |
