Santrac Returns To Chinese Football

The Serbian was best remembered for guiding Shandong Luneng to their famous 'double' win in 1999 - the club clinching both the league title and FA Cup.
That historical result helped the Shandong-based team establish themselves as one of the elite clubs in Chinese football. Before Santrac agreed terms with Changsha Jinde, rival Super League club Qingdao Zhongneng were also interested in hiring him.
The 61-year-old, however, opted for a one-year contract with Jinde instead. He is currently a technical official with the Serbian Football Association and is expected to complete the deal on Saturday.
As a player, Santrac was a prolific striker at club level in the former Yugoslavia. He scored 236 goals in domestic football when he played for the likes of Zemun, Partizan Belgrade and OFK Belgrade.
Despite his talents as a forward, he only earned eight caps for his country, and ironically, scored a solitary international goal. When he hung up his playing boots, Santrac moved straight into coaching.
He was appointed Yugoslavia's national coach in 1995 and guided his team during the 1998 World Cup in France. During the tournament, his team earned praise for playing attractive and attacking football.
After moving to China with Shandong, he applied the same coaching philosophy to the side and steered them to their dual honours in one season - an unprecedented result for a Chinese domestic team.
Santrac will replace Jinde's former coach, Milan Zivadinovic, who asked for an early termination of his contract at the end of the season because of health reasons.
