Shenhua Skipper Fails To Agree New Terms
The China international has failed to reach an agreement with the club despite being locked in talks with the management for nearly 10 hours since Thursday afternoon.
According to sources, the defender was unhappy with certain terms in his contract. Shenhua management and Li, however, did not agree on anything concrete when talks ended early Friday morning. Newly-appointed Shenhua head coach Wu Jingui was roped in to help smooth the contract negotiations. On Wednesday, the former China national manager convinced Lis team-mate Du Wei to put pen to paper to a new two-year deal. But, his presence at the negotiation table did little to convince Li that his future lies with Shenhua. Following the breakdown in talks, the 29-year-old is set to leave the Shanghai-based side. Chinese Super League rivals Shandong Luneng are favourites to sign him with the team looking to bolster their defence for the new season. Li joined Shenhua in 2006, after his previous team Shenzhen Jianlibao folder under financial difficulty. In the same year, he was sacked as national captain when he hit a player in the squad. After the 2002 World Cup, he joined China team-mate Li Tie for trials at English Premiership side Everton. While Li Tie was signed by the Toffees, Li Weifeng failed to secure a permanent deal and returned to Shenzhen. He has earned 93 caps for his country, scoring 11 goals. source:goal.com |
