Fake Injury Claims By Korean Footballers To Avoid Military Service
According a South Korean prosecutor, the players, which include 15 professional K-League footballers, dislocated their shoulders by swinging their arms while holding heavy weights or asking their teammates to jump on their shoulders.
Local media revealed on Monday that the majority of the indicted players ply their trade in the minor league. And if these players are found guilty, they are likely to be punished by performing community service for two years. Some of them, however, could be forced to complete their mandatory conscription or be even sent to jail. An orthopaedic surgeon who performed arthroscopic surgery on the players and issued false papers has also been charged, the prosecutor said. Under South Korea law, it is compulsory for men to spend up to 24 months in the military as part of compulsory service in the 670,000-strong armed forces. Conscription, however, can hamper their professional football careers. South Korea sometimes grant special exemptions to exceptional athletes who excel in international competitions. source:goal.com |
