Avramovic Gearing Up For Saudi Challenge
The Singapore boss rates playing against four-time World Cup finalists Saudi Arabia in their opening World Cup qualifier as the biggest match in their international history.
"It’s the biggest game, I would say, since we met China [in an Asian Cup Qualifier in 2006],” he said. "It’s definitely our most important challenge ever." The Serbian has prepared his charges by embarking on a training camp in Oman to acclimatise to the playing conditions in the region. The only worry Avramovic has is defender Daniel Bennett’s fitness. He suffered a minor groin strain after training on Monday. "If Daniel is not fit we will bring in Ismail Yunos. We will see how it goes then." he explained. Avramovic has opted for a cautious 4-5-1 line-up against the Saudis and believes Singapore need to hold off a fierce Saudi Arabia forward line led by AFC Player of the Year Yasser Al-Qahtani. Singapore captain Indra Sahdan, who is likely to start on the bench, praised Avramovic for his thoroughness in preparing the team for the clash against Saudi Arabia. Said Indra: "Raddy has prepared four videos on the Saudis and every tape has been edited to show us their set-pieces, off-the-ball runs and other aspects of their tactics. They will have home advantage but if we follow Raddy’s game plan, we can get something in Riyadh." Meanwhile, Goalkeeper Lionel Lewis will be handed the skippering duties ahead of Indra. The striker is expected only to be utilised in the second half. Avramovic, however, insists there has not been a change of captains in the team. "Indra is still our captain," he said. "There is no change there. When he is on the field he will carry the armband as usual." source:goal.com |
