Berbatov: We Can Beat Anyone
Dimitar Berbatov once threatened to leave Spurs in order to pursue his ambition for trophies.
But after the Lilywhites hammered rivals Arsenal 5-1 on Tuesday night the Bulgarian has a real chance of bringing some silverware to White Hart Lane in February as Tottenham face Chelsea in the Carling Cup final at Wembley. Magnificent Show "The performance against Arsenal was magnificent," said the ex-Bayer Leverkusen man. "The way we played and supported each other - that is what I have wanted to see. "Now I know that we can achieve a lot. We have shown that this club can challenge for trophies. Sometimes we underestimate our ability to do great things but Tuesday showed just what we can achieve, if we believe. "If we continue to play like this it does not matter who our opponents are - Arsenal, Manchester United or anyone." Reinvigorated Under Ramos And the Bulgarian was quick to recognise that while the players have stepped up a couple of gears in recent weeks, the man behind the improved performances is new boss Juande Ramos. "We have great players and a coach who can achieve a lot," said Berbatov. "We have a great future so let’s all believe in Tottenham and we won’t disappoint anyone. I’m not surprised how quickly the manager has turned things around because he is a great coach and a great man. He proved himself in Spain and now, from the way he talks to us and works with us, we see we can go places. "To win 5-1 against Arsenal was unbelievable - beyond all our dreams. No one imagined before the game that we could score five goals against one of the biggest clubs in Europe. But we played magnificent football with great combinations and great goals.” Wembley Ambitions The £30m-rated striker didn't go as far as committing his long-term future to Tottenham Hotspur, but he did stress that he and the team had important objectives to accomplish this season. "I have never been to Wembley before and everybody is very excited," he enthused. "It is a legendary stadium and I’ve always wanted to go there to watch a game. To actually play there in a final will be something else." Something For The Fans And after nine years without a trophy, Berbatov hopes they team can repay Spurs' loyal and long-suffering fans. "There are no words to describe the noise and the atmosphere created by our supporters against Arsenal. In the end we did it for them, for every supporter. Now let’s hope we can do it for them again at Wembley. No Time For Losers It’s great celebrating getting to the final but I don’t want to be a loser. Ledley King has been telling me about the last time Spurs were in a final when they lost to Blackburn and I don’t want that to happen. Runners-up is no great feat... we need to win something to take us to the next level. The manager has been there and done it, hopefully he can help us take the next step.” source:goal.com |
