Spurs' Tiago Push Hits Wage Snag
It is reported that the clubs have agreed on a fee of £9.7 million for the player, who has endured a torrid time in Turin since signing for the Calciopoli-stricken side.
Despite being touted as a major player in Claudio Ranieri's new-look Juventus squad, who indeed have over-achieved as they look almost certain for Champions League qualification in their first season back in Serie A, Tiago has somewhat embarrassingly been stringing together incredibly poor performances in the middle of the park in the majority of his outings with his new side. The fact that Tottenham are still willing to pay such a hefty fee for the player is peculiar in itself, but it appears that still won't be enough to seal the transfer, as the player is now reportedly demanding in excess of £50,000 per week. Levy, along with Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli, attempted to thrash out a deal with the player, but progress has, at least so far, been limited. Tiago, formerly of Chelsea, will be desperate to leave the Bianconeri. Even his own manager has admitted that the player has failed to settle at the club; this after having performed promisingly in the Lyon side which has dominated Ligue 1 in recent years and caused numerous upsets in the Champions League. Having proven his pedigree in English football, at least to some degree, Spurs would be safe in the knowledge that the player would at least perhaps settle better than he has in Italy, and hopefully rediscover the sort of form that has seen the 26-year-old gain 37 caps for Portugal. Should the dispute over the player's wages be true, it could prove a gamble too many for Tottenham on a player who has suffered such a dramatic dip in form as of late. With £50,000 being a sizeable wage at just about any club, Tiago's reported demands may even alienate him from the club's fans and even some of the players, and this before even joining the club. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen how the transfer saga will progress, and whether either party will concede as the transfer window draws to a close in a week's time. source:goal.com |
