Sven Hails Benjani On His Dream Debut

The Zimbabwean was a controversial deadline day signing, as the transfer window drew to a close and no one was quite sure whether the deal had been completed or not.
In the end, once all the smoke cleared and the dust settled the former Portsmouth striker made his debut today and could not have had a more telling impact.
He scored the second and decisive Manchester City goal in the first half at Old Trafford, where Sven's men came away from with an invaluable 2-1 victory in a match played in memory of the Munich air disaster of 1958. A plane crash that claimed over 20 lives - eight of them being Manchester United players, one of them being an ex-Manchester City hero turned journalist.
It was a tragedy that rocked the city, the country and to an extent even the entire world of football. Many had expected United, the team obviously hit hardest by the disaster, to truly turn on the style and run out emphatic winners today to honour their fallen heroes.
However, City had other ideas, and their tactical approach undid United in a way rarely seen during the course of a regular Premier League season.
Their manager, former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson, has in no uncertain terms heaped praise on new signing Benjani, and insisted his arrival was key in the tactical approach employed during today's historic fixture.
It was a 4-5-1 with Benjani as the focal point up front, supported by Martin Petrov and opening goal scorer Darius Vassell on either wing, a system which caused United's usually unflappable defence all sorts of problems.
“Benjani is the perfect player for 4-5-1,” Sven declared to SetantaSports.com after the game.
"He will help us in our quest for Europe. Fingers crossed that he will play the rest of the games, as he did for Portsmouth.
"He played more or less all of their games. He is a great player, with a great attitude.
“I don’t know [that City won the tactical battle].
“We have technique, we have pace, and with Benjani we have it even more.
"Benjani has good technique, he is very, very quick, he can keep the ball up there, and he can score goals. He will be very important for us.”
The win lifts City to seventh and right back in contention for European qualification despite their recent torrid run of sorts. Manchester United, however, may now fall six points behind leaders Arsenal, should they win their game tomorrow against Blackburn.
