Drogba Scores Brace Lifts Chelsea To Second Place

First half ended in nil nil and second half was far more exciting and saw arsenal take the early lead but could not defend it and Drogba struck twice to seal the victory for Chelsea and take them one point ahead of Arsenal and six points behind Man united who secured a comfortable win over Liverpool.

This match was a key fixture for both the teams and a true Grand Slam in its own sense. Arsenal wanted to win badly after a miserable run of four consecutive draws and Chelsea on the other hand wanted to defend their fantastic unbeaten run at home.

Arsenal saw Van Persie returning to the squad after quite a long time as the Dutch man was plagued with a string of injuries. Grant fielded a strong squad with Drogba being picked ahead of Anelka along with inform Joe Cole.

Drogba was fouled in the opening minutes of the match and was awarded a free kick. Eboue was booked for charging down Drogba's free-kick. He was about a yard away when the Ivorian struck. Ballack eventually took the kick and Almunia collected the ball comfortably.

Arsenal were looking out of touch in the first half and they were trying to get their passing rhythm back and Chelsea too wasted many chances. Drogba in particular missed a chance when he was one one with Almunia when Terry took a long shot at him, Drogba failed to convert it. Joe Cole and Ballack were booked for tackles on Van persie and Hleb.Joe cole was denied a penalty when he was brought down by Toure. First half saw many more misfired chances from both the sides and both the sides headed into the break without any goals.

Second half saw Arsenal attacking right from the start and they tested Cudicini. The dead lock was broken at 58 th minute when Fabregas sent his corner arcing towards the near post and Sagna lost his marker Kalou to glance a header into the net and scored hir first goal for the club. The goal looked to have put an end to Chelsea's unbeaten run at home which has stretched past four years now. But they found their hero in Drogba who equalised in the 73rd minute when the ball cannoned back off Frank Lampard into his path on the edge of the penalty area and Drogba reacted swiftly to drill a low shot beyond Almunia and into the bottom corner to put Chelsea back in the game.

Things did not end there Drogba scored his second goal of the match from Joe Cole's free kick. Things were now under control and Drogba looked to score his hat trick, only for Almunia to deny him with a superb save at his near post.

Chelsea sealed the victory and move to second place and things are getting worse for Arsene Wenger as the tittle race gets closer than ever.
