With José Mourinho out of the England frame once and for all, attention has turned to the other prospective candidates for the job. One of the names repeatedly linked with the position, Fabio Capello, is set to hold formal talks with the Football Association on Thursday.
Reports have suggested that the Italian, last stationed at Real Madrid, is now the front runner to become the successor to Steve McClaren.
Indeed, The Sun reckons that if he impresses Brian Barwick and the selection team enough, he will land the position - it's his job to lose.
Less Demanding, Open To Suggestions
The former Juventus, Roma and AC Milan boss has already clearly stated his interest in the England role, and is said to be a lot less demanding in his demands than Mourinho, something that no doubt impresses the FA.
Although the Italian does not speak English, he is keen to bring in Anglophile and Chelsea legend Gianfranco Zola as his assistant, something that would definitely sit well with the majority of England's players, as will Capello's willingness to have some Englishmen also involved in coaching roles.
Current U-21 boss Stuart Pearce and former Newcastle and Blackburn striker Alan Shearer are tipped to join the set-up should Capello take charge, with Portsmouth's Tony Adams also mentioned.
Mijatovic Warns England
Though Capello is the clear frontrunner for the job, his former chief at Real Madrid, Predag Mijatovic, reckons England would be wrong to take the plunge with the Italian. “For me, Capello is not an international boss," he said.
"His ideal habitat is at a club and if it’s a big club, so much the better. He needs a battle every day.” Should the FA heed the advice, it is believed that Marcello Lippi would be their next port of call, with O'Neill and Klinsmann yet further down the pecking order.
