No English Manager Was Up To Snuff, Claims FA Chief
Following the appointment of Italian tactician Fabio Capello, the FA faced some criticism for once again entrusting the most important post in English football to a foreigner, but Barwick insists that he was left with no other choice.
"I wrote out a template and put it against our current crop of English managers and not one of them ticked all the boxes," he said. "So the reality is we can't find a suitable English candidate at present. It has to be our ambition to have an English boss, but we have to be realistic.” Barwick went on to hint that he would have opted for Capello even if an Englishman had ‘ticked all the boxes’, due to the Italian’s world-beating credentials. "This time around we had to get the right man regardless of nationality. And we believe we have done that." Finally, the FA supremo insisted that Capello will have no problem dealing with the cult of celebrity surrounding the English team and the big egos that come with it. "People ask me how Fabio Capello will deal with big stars in the England dressing-room," he added. "If you look at his experience, he has dealt with some of the toughest and most egotistical players in world football. "He's his own man, with a formidable record in handling seriously famous footballers.” Capello will officially begin his tenure on Januaray 7, leaving him just under a month to prepare for his first match in charge, a friendly against Euro 2008 co-hosts Switzerland at Wembley on February 6. source:goal.com |
