Toldo Lined Up To Replace Buffon At Euro 2008

Buffon is currently struggling with chronic back problems that have forced him to miss Juventus’ last two Serie A matches, as well as the Coppa Italia tie with Inter.
Tests have revealed that the pain is unremitting and that there is disc swelling. This could be potentially troublesome as it could lead to a hernia.
If this was to occur then Buffon would require surgery, which would put him out of the game for between one and three months.
This has caused some serious concern among Azzurri ranks, as it has been well documented about the shortage of top-quality backup keepers beneath Buffon.
Roberto Donadoni is said to be unsure about current number two Marco Amelia, who has won just five caps and was very shaky when he played against the Faroe Islands in November.
Amelia was called up for this Wednesday’s friendly with Portugal in Zurich along with Sevilla’s Morgan De Sanctis, another shot-stopper that Donadoni is said to be less than convinced about.
Il Giornale claims that if the worst comes to the worst and Buffon’s back problems rule him out of Euro 2008, then Donadoni would turn to the experienced Toldo.
The 36-year-old has featured sparingly for Inter over the past couple of seasons after losing his first-team place to Julio Cesar.
However his brilliant Coppa Italia display against Juventus last week has only served as a reminder that Toldo still possesses outstanding ability.
The ex-Fiorentina man virtually retired from international football in Euro 2004, when he said that he no longer wanted to play the role of Gianluigi Buffon’s understudy.
However it is very likely that he will be tempted back into the fray if he is promised a starting slot in Buffon’s absence.
Toldo has won 28 caps for Italy, travelling to France 98’, Korea/Japan 2002, Euro 2000 and Euro 2004.
He is best remembered for his world-class displays at Euro 2000 and in particular his penalty-kick heroics in the epic semi-final victory over hosts Holland.
