A detailed medical examination has diagnosed a new medial ligament tear in the midfielder’s right knee.
“I don’t know how this has happened. Perhaps it’s just not my year. I’m cursed with bad luck” he said.
Frings felt pain in the troublesome right knee during training on Monday so had it checked out, with the depressing diagnosis the result.
“It’s a completely unsatisfactory situation for us” explained trainer Thomas Schaaf.
“We thought he would be available for the restart of the season. I don’t have an explanation for it” he added.
“It’s a shock” admitted captain Frank Baumann. “Just before the season gets underway again, it is a hefty blow for the team and for him personally.”
Frings has been limited to three Bundesliga appearances so far this season after suffering ligament damage in a pre-season friendly.
