I-League Club Profile: Mohun Bagan

The club boasts a rich tradition and a number of trophies to its name.
The green and maroon outfit has won the National Football League thrice but the last triumph was back in 2001-02.
Last Season
Mohun Bagan struggled to find its footing in the NFL last year as they began with a tame draw with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), who were later to be relegated.
The team managed to win just five games in the whole season, which was very poor for a club of Bagan’s calibre.
The Mariners had their share of problems last season as they were controlled by a number of coaches in a single season. Due to poor results in the NFL, all the coaches were sacked only for their replacements to be fired a month later.
Their defence was shaky throughout the season and let in as many as 22 goals. There were also rumours of an altercation between the strikers- Bhaichung Bhutia and Jose Ramirez Barreto. They finished just above the relegation zone.
The Squad
Bagan benefitted the most from the Mahindra exodus in the summer as S.Venkatesh, Rauf Khan, Peter Siddiqui, James Singh and Manju all joined the green and maroon brigade. So far, Venkatesh has impressed the most scoring seven goals in the Kolkata Premier League. Rauf Khan, Manju and Peter have strengthened the Bagan defense like never before though Deepak Mondal is ruled out of the entire season.
This Season
The Federation Cup was disappointing for the Kolkata team as they were ousted by their fierce city rivals East Bengal. Skipper Bhaichung Bhutia scored the equalizer in the final minute but a bad decision by the referee ended the Mariners campaign.
The Kolkata League triumph will surely heighten the confidence as they gear up for the I-League.
Coach
This year the coaching reins have been handed over to Carlos Parreira. The Brazilian has lots of experience which shall definitely help Bagan.
Mahindra coach Derrick Pereira says:
"This is Carlos’ second year in Indian football after coaching East Bengal last season. This year he will have a better understanding of how Indian football works.”
Style
Bagan have a very creative midfield and some of the best strikers in the country. These days they believe in keeping possession and then penetrating.
Prediction
Mohun Bagan looks set to finish in the top three atleast with the squad they have.
