I-League Team Of The Week: Round Seven

Goalkeeper: Sandip Nandy (MU):
In a round with abundant goals, it’s difficult to pick the best custodian. However, round seven brought two of India’s best goalkeepers face-to-face in a mouthwatering clash at the Cooperage stadium, Mumbai where one outscored the other.
Sandip Nandy did well to ward off the pressure from East Bengal’s Edmilson though he was unlucky in being involved in an unfortunate backpass incident.
Defenders Sushant Matthew (MU):
The right back was at his best against East Bengal on Sunday and didn’t budge under pressure from Edmilson. For his gritty performance, the diminutive Keralaite got his first man of the match award this season.
Mahesh Gawli (Dem):
“Every great player has learned the two C’s: how to concentrate and how to maintain composure.” This is what Mahesh Gawli is made of. The best defender of the country is always relaxed in one of the most stressful positions in football. It was indeed a strange comment from the Dempo coach accusing the player of taking things too easily and, being the lone problem of Dempo’s defense against Air India.
M.Suresh (EB):
The East Bengal skipper was exceptional in cutting down the Mahindra attacks and kept a check on Mohamed Rafi and Yusif Yakubu throughout the game. He was unlucky to finish on the losing side and picked up a injury towards the end of the game.
Robert L (CB):
The 19 year old put on another good show against Viva Kerala and found himself on the scoresheet as well.
Midfielders
Steven Dias (MU):
He was lucky to score against East Bengal as the opponent's backline - including the ever dependable Subrata Pal - made a mess of his lob. The Mahindra number 23 had promised a better display ahead of Christmas and rightly did so on Sunday.
Roberto Silva (Dem):
Though many believe that the Brazilian was not at his best against Air India and some in the press box even said that he has heavy feet this time around. All the comments were pointless as he came up with a great second half performance which included a superb pass for Ranti Martins to slot home.
Climax Lawrence (Dem):
The Indian national team player was uncompromising in the midfield and hardly ever put a foot wrong. He got the better of Air India medio Thomte and his pacy run down the right which ended in a measured cross for Ranti to put it past the Air India defense was a sight to behold.
Jose Ramirez Baretto (MB):
Though this is not his usual position, Baretto showed why he is still one of the most feared names in Indian football. He would often drop back in the midfield and make those key passes which would split the inexperienced Salgaocar defense. He scored twice in easily one of the most exciting encounters of the round.
Strikers:
Ranti Martins (Dem):
Though playing with a groin and ankle problem, the Nigerian scored two of the best goals of the season. In his last season on Indian soil, the Dempo striker is treating Indian fans to some great football.
Felix Chimaokwu (Sal):
His hat-trick was in vain as his team went down against Mohun Bagan. He showed his class a s a target man and did all he could to save the day for the Goan side.
Honourable Mentions:
Chidi Edeh (Dem): He came back into game against Air India from suspension and scored a brace.
Odafa Okolie (CB): The goalscoring machine added another two to his name and is now the league’s highest goalscorer.
Lalawmpuia (MB): The youngster came on a substitute and turned a provider to Jose Baretto for his two goals.
Mboyo Iyomi (CB): The Congolese striker found himself on scoresheet twice to win his second man of the match award of the season. He twin strikes and assists helped Churchill bury Viva Kerala at home.
Eduardo da Silva (JCT): The Brazilian striker scored a brace for his club. He came back to goalscoring ways after his exploits in the first two rounds.
