Bhaichung Turns Villan For His Former Club
The result takes Bagan to 20 points, seven behind league leaders Dempo while, East Bengal are in a perilous situation having just 8 from 12 games with just Salgaocar below them with 5 points.
All eyes were on the Red and Gold’s as a new era began under Manoranjan Bhattacharya. However, the football played by the Federation Cup winners was deplorable and the fans were visibly displeased. South African World Cupper MacDonald Mukansi’s terrible form in India continues as he squandered a scoring opportunity early in the game by shooting over. Mehtab Hussain cross was cleared by Douglas da Silva and nine minutes later, a penalty appeal fell on deaf ears of referee Dinesh Nair after the former was pushed by Bagan defender Mohanraj. The goal came around the half hour mark and it all started off a mispass by skipper Syed Rahim Nabi. Lal Kamal Bhowmick sent the ball for Baretto on the left who released a crafty cross for the Sikkimese Sniper to beat goalkeeper Subrata Pal. The Green and Maroon were reduced to ten men as Douglas da Silva was given marching orders after a second yellow booking when he brought down midfielder Mehrajuddin Wadoo in the 49th minute. East Bengal’s play was so higgledy-piggledy that they failed to take advantage of opposition despite being having an extra man for more than 40 minutes. Bhaichung’s second came in the 61st minute and the goal was again set up by Barreto. The Brazilian’s cross towards Bhaichung was desperately cleared by defender Surkumar Singh only to see the ball rebound off the skipper’s legs towards goal. East Bengal custodian Subrata Pal saved the first attempt but the ball went as far as a lurking Dharamjit Singh who was denied by the woodwork. The ball fell at the feet of Bhaichung who made no mistakes this time. That was Bhaichung’s 80th goal in the league and is now on level terms with Mahindra’s Yusif Yakubu, the league’s highest scorer. Bhaiching was the villain again for his former club as he had scored the decisive winner when the two sides met earlier in the league last month. At the end of the match, several East Bengal officials were manhandled and abused by the expectedly irritated fans. Final Score: 2-0 Goalscorer Bagan: Bhaichung Bhutia (29th & 61st) source:goal.com |
