Ferguson Fears For Scotland Future

McLeish has insisted this week that his future lies with the Scottish national side.

Ferguson though fears that the interest of Premier League clubs, may prove too much of a temptation for the former Rangers manager.

"Right now I wouldn't blame Big Eck if he did quit," Ferguson told the Scottish Sun.

"I want Eck to stay because I have a lot of time and respect for him, but I fear the lure of the Premiership might be too much for him to knock back.

"Premiership clubs have finances and salary offers the SFA have no chance of competing with.

"All I know is that no-one should hold a grudge against Alex McLeish if he does go.

"I would be gutted if we lost him, but I'd understand his reasons. I think he misses the day-to-day involvement, the same way Walter Smith did when he left the job to come back to Rangers."

Ferguson admits he is still struggling to cope with the last-gasp defeat to Italy which killed off Scotland's hopes of qualifying for Euro 2008.

He said: "I've known defeat in this game, tasted it many times and recovered, but this? I just feel hollow, as if my insides have been scooped out.

"Every day it is becoming harder to accept I won't be there, not easier."
