Lisbon manager Paulo Bento was given a 12-day touchline ban today
Sporting Lisbon manager Paulo Bento was today given a 12-day touchline ban and suspension by the Disciplinary Commission for the Portuguese League of Clubs (LPFP), for offences demeaning the reputation, honour and good name of referees.
The offences cited by the LPFP regard comments made by Paulo Bento following the Benfica-Sporting league fixture in October. The oft-outspoken manager will now be unable to sit on the bench in Sporting's league match on Saturday, where they will face relegation battlers Paços de Ferreira at the Alvalade XXI Stadium, and will also be prohibited from participating in any press conferences or making any public declarations in this 12-day period. The Benfica-Sporting match in question was the sixth fixture of the season, and following a 0-0 draw, Paulo Bento heavily criticised match referee Pedro Henriques, alleging that he had ignored the assistant referee's signal to award a penalty in favour of Sporting. Sporting have had a difficult season, and Paulo Bento has recently come under pressure due to recent poor results, with many fans manifesting their disapproval by booing the team or waving white tissues/handkerchiefs at the manager. However, Sporting achieved a good result last weekend by beating Maritimo 2-1 in Madeira, and will have been hoping to build on the result. The touchline ban and suspension of Bento will be yet another blow to the Lisbon side, and comes at a time when the club looked to be turning the corner after some less than impressive displays. The loss of their often influential manager will prove a stern test of character for Sporting, and with a home fixture versus the penultimate team in the league quickly approaching, fans will expect nothing less than a victory to end the year. source:goal.com |
