Ref Ben Haverkort decided that the De Graafschap – AZ match could not go ahead as planned because of the state of the playing surface.
“The way I see it, this decision could have been taken a day before. The De Graafschap officials knew that the pitch was frosty. They also knew that one could not reasonably expect that the situation would suddenly improve,” the former Ajax, Barcelona and Netherlands coach was quoted on his club’s official website.
“Had this decision been taken earlier it would have saved us a world of trouble. In our effort to prepare ourselves in the best possible way we had already left Alkmaar for a training camp in Doetinchem on Tuesday afternoon.”
This was AZ’s second Eredivisie game postponed this season, after their clash with Feyenoord which has now been moved back to January 30. The KNVB is expected to set a new date for the De Graafschap fixture within the next few days.
