The 33-year-old Dutchman has been around in his time, as Sparta Rotterdam are the ninth club of a career that has seen him also play for the likes of Liverpool. The six-time international shot-stopper has also spent five years in Spain, including spells with Mallorca and Almería, whom he left only in June.
But now, as the Algemeen Dagblad insists, Westerveld is about to return immediately to the country for Barça, obviously at Frank Rijkaard’s will. The 45-year-old coach was the one who first selected Westerveld for the national side back in 1999 and is believed to rate him highly enough to this day.
The former Twente, Vitesse, Portsmouth and Everton towering custodian returned to his homeland in September after eight years of playing abroad and only recently informed Sparta that he would stick around until the end of the season. But maybe that won’t be the case after all.
