Valkanis And Costanzo Sign New One Year Deals With Adelaide United

With their contracts extended, the duo will ply their trade at Hindmarsh Stadium until early 2009. Veteran defender Valkanis will be pleased to learn he has been offered a new deal. After suffering a knee injury early in the season, he had not featured for Adelaide for the rest of the campaign.
The 33-year-old was also named as captain at the start of the A-League season. Costanzo, 32, featured in 15 matches for the Reds in a dismal campaign where the club finished sixth.
Valkanis wants to perform at his best for the new season after undergoing successful rehabilitation on his knee.
"The knee is coming along really well and that's why I decided to go on for another season," he said.
"It makes you think about a lot of things while you're out injured and it's hard being out for so long. But the disappointment of not making the finals last season has motivated me a whole lot more to do my best to help the team go that one step further."
Adelaide coach Aurelio Vidmar believes it is important to keep the core of his team together for the upcoming season.
He said: "I think it is extremely important that we have our strongest team vying for a spot every week. We had that for about the first half of last season and the results showed that as we were at the top of the table."
Striker Des Giraldi, on the other hand, was not given a new contract at the club. However, the 22-year-old will still feature for Adelaide in the AFC Champions League group stage before his departure.
He said: "I've really enjoyed my time here and I had some bad luck in my first season. But I think I've taken some steps forward in the last 12 months."
