Smith Wary Of Stuttgart Backlash

Not Their Best
Stuttgart are already out of the running for the knock-out stages of the Champions League, but it is generally believed that they have played nothing close to their best football, and that is what Walter Smith is worried about.
"I think the fact they are in their current position would be surprising to them," he said.
"Most people wouldn't have imagined that they'd have played four games and not have any points at all in the group."
"That's a motivating factor for them in many ways. They have to show they can still pick up points.
"From our point of view, I think it will be a difficult match for that reason as much as anything."
Title To Blame
He also attempted to explain Stuttgart's stuttering start to the season.
"If you win a championship in the manner they did, there is always a knock-on effect," he opined.
"They had a long run of games at the end of last season, which they won.
"There was an after-effect, but now they have settled down. They will be in the Bundesliga top four this year.
"There will be a level of commitment from them against us because of their embarrassment at playing four games and not picking up a point.
"That would be the same for any team, including us. At the start of the campaign, people probably looked at the section and thought we were the side it was maybe likely to happen to.
"It's happened to Stuttgart and that's why I think they still have a bit to play for. It's not about tangible success - because even the Uefa Cup has gone for them - but it is about showing they can play at that level.
"Obviously they can, but just haven't had a good tournament so far."
Rangers could qualify with a win against Lyon on the final matchday no matter what happens in Germany, but are keen to get home with time to spare.
